When I travel I love to immerse myself in the local culture, I find the best way to do that is to cook and eat with the locals and take the local transit.  Cascais is a sea side town 30 minutes by train from Lisboa and abundant with fresh fish and shellfish.  My favourite dish was clams in cataplana.  I would snack on this dish at the end of the day, sitting at a beachside cafe, vinho verde nearby, watching the world go by or reading my book du jour.

In this cooking class you will learn to make mussels in cataplana (I prefer the mussels over the clams for this dish).  The cataplana is a clam shaped dish with a hinged lid.  This is a very traditional dish used in Portugal, especially in the Algarve.  Traditionally, huntsmen would cook their meal in the cataplana over open flames.   Nowadays you will see people gathering at the seaside cafes to connect over clams cataplana.

Paula's Portuguese Mussels Cataplana
A traditional seafood dish from the Algarve region of Portugal. Cataplana is the name given to the cookware, this recipe works in a pot or a cataplana

Ingredient List
Serves 4

3 lbs Mussels
2 Tbsp Olive Oil
1 lg Sweet Onion thinly sliced
50 g smoked Ham (I like to use Praga/Prague Ham)
1 "stick" Spanish Chorizo med or regular spice level
1/4 tsp Paprika (I prefer to use a mild chorizo and the Spanish pimentón paprika)
1-2 sprigs of parsley

Kitchen Equipment
Cataplana or large pot with a lid

What to prep in advance:
Scrub the mussels to get any bits of dirt off the shell, then trim the beards and rinse them well. Discard any mussels that have broken shells or are not tightly closed. Set aside in a bowl in the fridge until ready to use. I will also demonstrate how to clean the mussels in our culinary adventure.

If you cancel two weeks before your cooking class you will receive a full credit, which you can apply to another cooking class. After that, for in-person classes you may send someone else in your place (we ask you to notify us in advance if you're doing this). For online cooking classes you are welcome to transfer your spot to someone else. In the rare event that an instructor needs to cancel last minute, guests will receive a full refund. We do not otherwise offer refunds.

Sign up for your cooking class, price is by device so feel free to invite friends to join you in your kitchen or make it a family event. A day before your experience you will receive your zoom and recipe link.

Cooking Instructions

All online cooking classes include interactive cooking instruction and all of the recipes. After registration you’ll receive an email with your shopping list and equipment list. Also available when you sign up.


Online Cooking Classes are 1.5 hours in duration, and are co-hosted with In My Kitchen founder Paula Mohammed, on zoom.
