In this hands on immersive culinary adventure the lid will be pulled back on the bento box.  Participants will learn the culture and traditions that surround the bento box.  Our aspiring chefs, will learn about the culture of  Japan, specifically the Kansei region.  Naomi lived most of her life in Japan in between playing pro soccer and pro futsal. Read more about Naomi here.

Participants will make 6 different dishes, chosen specifically for the role they play in the bento box experience.  At the end of the hands-on portion of this culinary adventure, everyone will sit down together and enjoy their creations.  Participants will receive a pdf with all the recipes and tips from Naomi.  The dishes are all chosen to encourage everyone to go home and start making their own bento box lunches; they will be the envy of everyone at lunch-time!

This is a three-hour experience. Best suited for 10 to 16-year-olds.  We do need a minimum of 3 guests to run this culinary adventure.

Our Bento Box culinary adventure takes place in Naomi's Kitchen in the Mt Pleasant neighbourhood near 5th and Main St.

Menu:

Onigiri - two ways

A fun ice breaker to get things going, you will learn to make what all Japanese kids first learn at elementary school: Onigiri (rice balls or in this case rice triangles)

Gomae

Green vegetable (Naomi will wait and see what is the most fresh) served with Naomi's homemade gomae sauce made from sesame seeds.

A big part of Naomi's cooking style is creating flavourful dishes that are also nourishing.

Tamagoyaki

Using a special Tamagoyaki pan everyone will have a turn at making this Japanese- like omlette, there is a real skill to rolling that egg!

Chicken Tsukune

Japanese chicken meatballs; flavourful, light and so easy to make.

Miso soup with homemade dashi

Naomi will demonstrate how to make your own dashi (broth).  Every morning, Naomi's mother would make a pot of dashi and use it through out the day to add to the various meals.

Shiratama Parfait

Little mochi balls with fresh fruit and ice cream (not in the bento box!)
